The colour palette used in this piece is limited to whites and very bland watered down greys and usually bright colours such as oranges, reds, yellows and greens, this helps show the viewer that the piece is supposed to be aimed toward a younger audience as the piece is full of light and bright colours which could represent happiness and prosperity.
The focal point of this piece is the child in the centre of the piece as from whatever prospective you look at the piece the child is always the closest to the viewer, also he is larger than the rest of the characters in the piece making him stand out even more, not only this but he is also the only character in the piece holding an item.
the image depicts a child arriving to a futuristic land, i can infer that he has just arrived there as in the area he is located the objects around him deter that the area is some sort of landing zone as there is some sort of ship, and some of the characters nearby are wearing attire which could be connected with the attire of a pilot.
The atmosphere of the piece is very peaceful and tranquil, the fact that the piece has a child in it could help convey the innocence of the piece.
I think that the meaning of the piece is to show how futuristic the world depicted is, and how tranquil it is due to the landscape and effect given from it.
i first notice the structures in the background as they are very unique and are shaped and coloured in a certain ways, which helps depict how futuristic the buildings are.
Ralph Mcquarrie
The colour palette used in this piece is limited to a forest/ nature filled palette which has dark and light browns, greens and yellows. i think this type of palette has been used to convey the location of the piece which looks as if it is in a forest.
The focal point of the piece is most likely the two characters towards the left centre of the piece
The image depicts a Connolly of an alien species which live in a forest, in the piece it shows where they live and it gives a tribe feeling of when looking at the piece.
The atmosphere of the piece has a nature feeling to it, it shows what seems to be a very peaceful Connolly , it depicts family's of this alien race in the background as there is what seems to be a child in the background, the atmosphere seems very tranquil.
I first notice the huts towards the back and how this Connolly is based within the trees of a forest.
i think that the meaning of the piece is to show how tranquil this colony is within the forest and how hidden away they are.
My colleges agreed with my views on the piece, they commented that the piece looks very tranquil and peaceful, that it represents a village or Connolly in the trees, the first thing noticed to them was the creatures in the background, and the huts.

Rule of thirds

My chosen artist could possibly have followed the rule of thirds as when i placed the rule of thirds grid ontop of the piece, i noticed that on most of the cross heirs there are points of interest such as the top left circle and top right circle, as these points are the most lively points of the piece. i would say that the focal point of the picture is the characters, more specifically the two characters on the left. The biggest form in the picture is most likely the huts in the background as they stand out the most, they are the lightest part of the picture and the largest part too.
I then drew a few sketches using the rule of thirds grid:

Golden spiral

The golden spiral is a method of showing where the focal point of the piece is, it connects all parts of the piece to show a path to the focus point of the piece.
Below are a few representations of the use of the golden spiral.

Dominant weight

After looking into dominant weight, i tried to incorporate it into my own sketches, below is my attempt at this:
I made an attempt to draw a industrial estate, which was enclosed by a metal fence, and a security check- in point with roads leading around the estate to each of the large tube towers. i used the rule of thirds grid to help me sketch this out, and i tried to make the sketch 3D.

Developing my sketches

i merged them all together onto a piece of paper, and my peers voted as to which one i should develop, i decided to go with what my peers voted most for, in which was the top piece

Developing a initial  sketch.
I started by making a plan for the piece, by using a rule of thirds grid, shaded areas/ lighting plan, leading lines and dominant from plan also a notice to where my focal point is.

i created this piece using Photoshop, this was suitable as i was able to effectively use a digital pen to paint in the programme, i used my plan to instruct myself as to where i would be using light in the waterfall and how large i would be drawing the waterfall. something i could have done differently in this piece was the way i drew the trees, the trees were initially difficult to design for me as i didnt know how i could make the effect of the forest, but i was happy with the final product of the trees.

perspective sketches
perspective sketches is when something is drawn to show distance, when something is drawn small on the horizon line it means that it is at a long distance. to create a perspective drawing you would need a horizon line, which has a vanishing point (point of infinity) which then includes orthogonal lines.
below are a few thumbnail sketches which show examples of perspective sketches.

Mini project
to assess what i have learnt in the past few weeks i will be making a environmental piece in which uses all the skills i have learnt such as perspective drawings, rule of thirds and many other drawing techniques
To start the mini project i began by creating a mind map with the different environments i could create.

once picking this specific enviroment i made a mood board to help me gather ideas for the piece.
Dominant form is the part of a piece in which is the largest shape/object stands out the most, it uses visual weight to stand out to the viewer, sub dominant form is the secondary form in which is smaller than the dominant form yet still uses visual weight to stand out within the piece. framing is when you use an object to make your focal point or light source stand out, it usually involves the object in which is wanted to stand out, being in the middle of the framing shape, an example of this is in my 3 silhouette in which i use a window frame to frame a nuclear explosion in the back, this makes it stand out more, and framing can also be used as leading lines, leading lines are used to guide the viewer to a point in which the artist wants the viewer to look at. the focal point is the centre of the piece, it is the most important piece of the project and usually is in the centre of the project it can be spotted clearly by using the light or leading lines to guide the viewer to it.

story behind the nuclear fallout environment
After the third world war was nationally announced between north Korea and american  and its allies there was little time to prepare for nuclear fallout, it was unexpected and it caught many civilians by surprise, which is why there is a child in a classroom showing the nuclear bomb going off in the background. the scene is trying to show the devastation of what todays weapons can cause, and how they affect everyone in society.
inspired artist : Leonard Boyarsky this artist has inspired me as he is a character/ environmental artist for the popular game franchise called fallout, he has influenced me as alot of his work is related to the nuclear fallout landscape, he also created the mascot for the fallout series called vault boy, in which i tried to replicate the style of the vault boy within the single character of my piece.

final piece

The project brief required me to design a 2d environment using the techniques i had recently learnt about. i chose to create a nuclear fallout environment which can link directly to current world problems such as the threat of north korea launching nuclear missiles upon certain countries, my piece conveys this fear upon nuclear war and how it can strike everyone mercilessly. i used multiple techniques within my project such as blending to find a perfect in between for shading and light sources. i also used a few composition techniques such as the golden spiral and rule of thirds. i also used dominant forms, perspective, framing, visual weight, lighting and leading lines within my final piece. using these techniques helped develop my piece into something more complex from what it originally was. i used leading lines and framing the guide the viewer toward the focal point of the project by using the windows edge for a straight guiding edge, i also used lighting to highlight where the viewer should be looking. my style of artwork was inspired by artist Leonard Boyarskythis, as he is a main character and concept artist within bethesda who have made the most popular post apocalyptic nuclear game, i have took inspiration from his colour palettes, style and use of brush technique and how his apocalyptic world looks within his work. this helped my work as it developed my techniques within my work so my composition and digital painting style became more complex.
during my project i used a single process to filter through my work to get to the stage of my final piece, i started this process by a making ten different silhouettes and i chose two of the most interesting shape compositions, i then developed these pieces by drawing the, into sketch overs in which i would start to include my techniques such as rule of thirds, shadow mapping, dominant forms and framing, after this i would chose the one piece in which i thought i could develop to a certain extent, id then start to shadow map and chosen where the light source would be placed within the piece, i would underpaint, only to finally add in the tone, final colours to the piece as well as touching up in any place i thought looked undeveloped.
In this project i used multiple sources for research, these consist of sources from the internet when looking for nuclear environments, going onto popular game franchises to see how the open world has been generated, i looked at concept art from an inspiring artist and concept art to do with my chosen environment. i also used books and magazines aswell as comic books to help guide me into a design for the environment i was happy with, my research was in fact effective as it helped guide me chose the appropriate colours and shapes.
during this project i used materials such as the programme called Photoshop, i used Photoshop for a variety of different tasks from making mind maps on what environments i would base my piece off, to actually using it for the digital painting of my piece, while using Photoshop i used a variety of different tools including: the brush tool at a variety of different opacity, changing the hardness of the brush at different points a swell as the brush size, i also used the eraser tool and the polygonal lasso tool these tools were critical in my piece as i would come to use different techniques within the project, not only this but these tools effected my work by giving me more of a choice of what i can use to digitally paint my piece, the tools gave me more of a selection within my work meaning i could create more a complex piece by using the colour palette to mix colours, and use different brushes at different sizes, capacities and hardness'.
In my final piece for my mini project i decided to use very basic and dim colours for the most part which consisted of a few different variations of browns and blacks, then for the dominant form and the focal point i have use very bright colours which differ from the rest of the piece, so that the nuclear blast in the background could stand out more, and so that the light within the piece could be shown more realistically. This chosen colour scheme fits the atmosphere as it represents the dim tone and backstory of the piece. The direction of the light is centred from the nuclear explosion, which is why the background of the piece is dark from the corners. using the backgrounds lighting, it can link to the grim backstory of the piece, with the shadows affecting the atmosphere of the piece. I am happy with the resulting scene as it has turned out exactly how i wanted it too, from the colour palette to how the scene is shaped, most of the piece went to plan,i am most proud of how the nuclear explosion has turned out, i think the colours and shape are very accurate to how a nuclear explosion would look. i think i used my time very effectively within this project, i also used resources such as the internet to find reference images for my piece, i think my piece could easily fit into the franchise of fallout made by bethesda, it links directly into the nuclear war backstory and the tone of the scene is very similar. the resources i used were effective in helping me with my piece as i was able to find and use the correct colour palette for the nuclear explosion. from the original plan i removed the second person from the bottom left corner as i thought that including this person would distract the viewer and distort the perspective of the piece, it would take all the focus away from the centre of the piece, which is where the viewer is leaded using framing, lighting and shadow mapping, if i could change anything about the piece i would most likely change the colours i used on the person in the piece and i would most likely change how i designed the person in the piece too as i think that the way i designed the person, makes the pieces look less realistic.
